    RAC for Information Technology Network Management (ITNM) is for people who have a significant amount of work or life experience in the field of IT network management, and wish to have their skills officially recognized by a Quebec college. ITNM candidates generally have specific, specialized skills in the areas of network installation, migration, inventory management, component configuration, performance verification, network supervision and security management. Often, they work, or have been working in positions such as:

    network administrator • network manager • network supervisor • web technician • data centre operator • computer network technician • system administrator • network installation manager •network operations manager • network controller • network analyst • LAN operator • WAN administrator • LAN administrator

    Other candidates have acquired strong technical and administrative skills through their life and wish to see them formally recognized. Champlain’s RAC services can help those individuals obtain an official diploma (DEC – Diplôme d’études collégiales) by assessing their current competencies, and providing them with training for the ones they are lacking.

    If you have experience in most of the items listed below, you could be a good RAC candidate:

    1. Analyze the work environment, functions, challenges and needs.
    2. Solve and apply mathematical problems and concepts as they pertain to computer networks.
    3. Install and optimize hardware, software, operating systems and network technologies.
    4. Use a programming language in the development of object-oriented tools.
    5. Apply research methodologies in order to obtain pertinent information on network needs.
    6. Interact and communicate in a work environment, using conflict negotiation skills and a client-based approach.
    7. Apply, analyze and evaluate the essential facts, concepts, procedures and architectures relating to the design and implementation of computer networks and applications/tools.
    8. Plan, design and install networks and their related services using an algorithmic approach.
    9. Analyze and evaluate existing network architectures and infrastructures.
    10. Implement modifications to existing networks, or build new networks through evaluation, planning and selection of hardware and software.
    11. Supervise the operation of a network, manage inventory as well as personnel.
    12. Provide support to network users and troubleshoot network problems.
    13. Manage staff and log all necessary changes in order to ensure the quality of work.
    14. Ensure the evolution of a computer network through the evaluation of both network and business needs.

  • RAC Process

    1. Attend the Info Session

    If you believe that you have skills and knowledge that are comparable to those listed in the competencies of one of the programs for which RAC services are offered at Champlain, please sign-up for an info-session to find out if RAC is the right option for you.

    In our sign-up form, you may also choose to request a personalized assessment of your CV. One of our RAC advisors will then help you determine if the RAC process is right for you.

    2. Apply to be Admitted to the College

    After attending the info session, you will need to officially register as a candidate with the College and bring the necessary documents for your admission to the RAC process. A list of required documents is available on each service’s page, in the “Preparing your Application” section.

    3. Apply to be Admitted to the RAC Process

    Once admitted to the College, a RAC Advisor will review your file and analyze all your documents. If your experience is considered sufficient, your application for RAC will be accepted. Afterwards, you will be contacted by a RAC Advisor who will request that you complete the self-assessment forms.

    4. Attend a Validation Interview

    Once you have completed the self-assessment forms, a content specialist will review your forms. Afterwards, you will be asked to attend a validation interview during which the content specialist will review the self-assessment forms with you. During this interview, the specialist will make recommendations for each competency (ex: evaluation, partial training, attend a complete course).

    5. Evaluation and Training

    For your evaluations, you will be required to provide proof of your skills and knowledge (certificates, job description, employer letter, video, etc.) for each program competency. You will also need to complete evaluation activities or participate in an interview to earn recognition for the competencies.For the partial training, you will have the option to:

    • Attend one of our seminars on a specific topic;
    • Consult our free online resources;
    • Attend group activities;
    • Receive one-on-one training from one of our experts.

    You will also have access to the College’s RAC website and to availability time of a content specialist. Upon request, you may also receive small group or individual training.

    6. Graduation

    Once you have successfully completed all of the evaluations, you will receive your AEC or DEC.

    My name is Steve King, and I’m enrolled in the RAC ITNM.

    I came last August in 2015, and I came with my family and it was a little bit hard for me so I wanted to find a job, and while browsing for job offers, I came across an ad talking about RAC. I read about it, and I got enrolled. I had some concerns because going back to studies while having a need to work is not something really easy. I am coming from Cameroon and I worked there as an IT project manager. I did not have any diploma from Quebec. So in my mind it would have been a good thing to start in Quebec and have a diploma in Quebec. I really appreciated to be able to work during the week and study at the same time. The content specialists were great, really great, we had personalized follow-up in case you had some questions, some difficulties, they were always available for you. Either directly on Skype, or through email.

    It was a great experience, because each of these content specialists, was not really like a guru or something like that. They were sharing their experience, by sharing their experience, they brought a special insight in the things we were learning. With the experience and the insight of these content specialists, I started seeing things in other ways. And I think this will help me to really improve in my career or in my field.

    A few months after starting RAC, I found a job, in my area. I’m sure that it was an argument because during the interview I mentioned the fact that I was studying for a DEC program, so I think it’s something worth.

    I learned so many things during this program, I’m sure everything I learned, the experience I got from this program, will certainly be worth in the coming months.

    Sara Tremblay - Graduate

    Mon nom c’est Sarah Tremblay et mon programme était ITNM RAC. En fait ce qui m’a motivé moi, c’est que où je travaille présentement j’avais besoin d’un diplôme d’études collégiales pour avoir une promotion au travail. Donc c’est la raison principale pour laquelle je me suis inscrite.

    Également aussi parce que c’est un programme qui est accéléré et c’était quelque chose vraiment excellent pour moi.

    Mon expérience de travail en informatique est très variée.  Présentement ce que je fais au travail, je suis technicienne en déploiement automatisé pour le CCM 2012 de Microsoft et j’ai à peu près 10 ans d’expérience dans le domaine.

    C’est une reconnaissance des acquis et si je n’avais pas eu d’expérience dans le domaine, s’aurait peut-être un peu plus difficile. Mais ce qui est bien aussi de ce programme-là c’est qu’on apprend quand même beaucoup de choses donc j’ai trouvé que c’est un aspect qui était très intéressant. En fait, la différence principale c’est que c’est en accéléré.  Et moi ce que j’ai beaucoup apprécié c’est que souvent les gens comme moi, on travaille déjà.  On est beaucoup occupé et on ne peut pas nécessairement se permettre de retourner sur les bancs d’école.  Aussi ça demande des compétences à l’avance donc c’est sûr et certain que ça c’est pris en considération et si on me demandait vraiment la grosse différence, je dirais que c’est ça.  C’est que ça reconnait nos acquis, nos compétences.

    Le site web de la RAC, ce que j’ai vraiment apprécié c’est que c’était disponible en tout temps et on n’avait pas besoin de débourser pour acheter des livres, la matière, dans le fond, du programme.  Donc c’est sûr que c’était vraiment utile et en plus que ça ne coutait rien. C’était accessible n’ importe  quand n’importe où.

    Moi j’ai rencontré des gens qui font la même chose que moi, qui travaillent pour les mêmes genres d’employeurs que moi donc c’est sûr et certain que c’est aussi plaisant de rencontrer des gens qui vivent les mêmes choses que nous au jour le jour. Pour le networking c’est génial, c’est sûr parce qu’on rencontre toutes sortes de personnes.  Ma langue première c’est le français, et je pense que tout est tellement bien fait que même que si tu ne parles pas parfaitement anglais, c’est facile de comprendre.  Puis surtout que les gens, ils comprennent le français, donc au pire des cas ce qui peut arriver c’est que toi tu parles en français et la personne te répond en anglais.  Donc comme on appelle c’est un peu du <franglish>. Ça arrive parfois.  Donc ce n’est pas vraiment un obstacle que ce soit juste offert en anglais.  Pour moi, en tout cas, ce ne l’était pas. Ce qui était bien utile c’était- on a un local avec – on appelle ça un laboratoire CISCO , chaque étudiant a accès à des switchs, des routers, il y a même des stations de travail et ça émule parfaitement ce qu’on peut retrouver sur le marché du travail. On a même une partie en haut qui est un “patch panel”. On avait accès à des laboratoires qu’on appelle virtuels qui représentaient ce qu’on pourrait retrouver dans une salle de réseau. Donc ça c’était utile parce qu’on pouvait utiliser ça à la maison aussi. On avait accès au deux mais moi ma préférence c’était du virtuel, définitivement.

    Moi, je travaille quand même 35 heures/ semaine comme la plupart des gens. Ce qui est intéressant avec la RAC c’est que c’était les fins de semaine et parfois le soir.  Donc ça a quand même bien adonné avec mon horaire et ça s’est mis en place tout seul. Ça demande une certaine discipline mais ça en vaut vraiment la peine en bout de ligne. Je pense que le fait que ce soit offert justement les fins de semaine ça permet à tout le monde de travailler parce qu’il faut prendre aussi en compte que ce n’est pas tout le monde qui peut se permettre de ne plus travailler pour retourner sur les bancs d’école.   Fait que la RAC c’est une super belle opportunité  si on regarde ça de cette façon-là.

    Tetyana Tsomko - Advisor

    Tetyana Tsomko is the RAC advisor for Champlain’s RAC services. She has been in education for more than 12 years. Having completed a Bachelor’s degree and Diploma in Education, English and German Linguistics and Literature, an AEC in Early Childhood Education, she earned her MA in Educational Studies (concentration in Adult Education) from Concordia University in 2013.

    Equipped with experience as both a teacher, content specialist, and a pedagogical counselor in different settings, Tetyana brings her expertise to run IT Network Management program and support RAC candidates in their learning journey. Her passion about teaching, instructional design, and appreciative evaluation, enables her to contribute effectively to the continuous improvement of the RAC services at Champlain College Saint-Lambert.

  • FAQ

    How many years of work experience do I need to be admitted?

    There is no set number of years of experience required to be admitted to the RAC process. What counts is what you know, not how you’ve acquired it nor how long it took you to acquire it. When considering an application, we analyze your overall experience: we consider any significant experience you may have had in the field, your education and training, and your life experience.

    Does my volunteer work count as work experience?

    Yes. For the RAC process, it is not important where or how you’ve acquired your competencies: work experience, volunteer work, self-study, non-formal training, mentorship, volunteer activities and hobbies are all considered as long as you can prove that you have performed them.

    Do I need a high school degree to be admitted to the RAC process?

    No. Some people who have not completed high school may be admissible to the RAC process. If you have not completed high school, but have significant experience in a field of study linked to one of our AECs or DECs, contact one of our advisors to see if you could be eligible for the RAC process.

    Do I need to have an evaluation comparative from the MIDI (Ministre de l’Immigration, de la Diversité et de l’Inclusion) in order to be admissible to RAC?

    No. A RAC Advisor will analyze your file and let you know whether your evaluation comparative will be required or not.
