Schedule: Mondays & Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. (6 hours/week) – 100 hours total
Practicum: 6 sessions of 3 hours each – TBD – 20 hours total
Format: Face-to-Face and *Online
*Students may register for and participate in this course at a distance. Distance students will be responsible for securing practicum sessions with accredited language schools in their area in order to be awarded the certificate.
This program provides students with an opportunity to become certified English as a Second Language instructors based on TESL Canada requirements. Students will have the chance to study contemporary modes of instruction, master the English grammar set, practice their in-class instruction skills, learn to become course designers, incorporate IT into their classroom activities, develop a reflective practice in the teaching of ESL, and finally, apply for TESL Canada certification should they be eligible to do so (see https://tesl.ca for more information on requirements).
The program is composed of three (3) separate courses: Mastering the English Language, How to Teach English as a Second Language and the TESL Practicum 1. The first two courses (100 hours) provide students with both a theoretical background and cutting-edge teaching and learning approaches. The last course provides students with a practicum component (20 hrs) in which students authentically practice teaching real ESL students, locally at Champlain College, or externally as an internship. By program’s end, students will have targeted potential employers and will be ready to start teaching both domestically and internationally.
|Mastering the English Language
|This course provides students with an opportunity to master the English language both in concept and practice. The main goals of this course are to provide future ESL teachers with a complete working knowledge of the English grammar set as well as basic instructional strategies to get started teaching. Other goals include the examination of regional differences in language use, the development of the ability to effectively explain linguistic notions and approaches to teaching and learning the four language skills (Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening)|

|HOW TO TEACH ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
|This course provides students with an opportunity to examine and commit to approaches in the teaching and learning of English as a Second Language. Students will have the opportunity to analyze and choose contemporary modes of instruction, analyze instructional theories and their efficacy, develop lesson plans and materials, assess student learning needs and apply appropriate classroom management and assessment techniques. The main goal of this course is to prepare students for their practicum.|

|TESL PRACTICUM 1
|This course provides students with an opportunity to teach real ESL students in an academic setting and complete the program of study by meeting the 20-hour practicum requirement. Students will apply all of the concepts and procedures they have previously learned in peer- and teacher-reviewed lessons as well as in real ESL classes. A major goal of this course is to develop a reflective practice in future ESL instructors in regards to instructional theories, technologies and individual beliefs. Furthermore, students are encouraged and supported in securing internships with other institutions in order to meet the practicum requirement.|

- Explain English grammar, syntax, phonology, morphology, idioms and exponents;
- Apply pedagogical and andragogic best practices in the teaching of ESL;
- Facilitate student learning and development;
- Analyze student learning styles, goals, needs, prior-learning, culture and identity;
- Evaluate the progress of ESL students using accurate metrics and effective feedback;
- Apply instructional strategies that target the four language skills (speaking, writing, listening and reading);
- Create course plans and didactic materials for the teaching of ESL;
- Apply professional conduct, and classroom management;
- Develop a reflective practice and a desire for continuous professional development;
- Explore job leads as well as domestic and foreign employers.
Candidates must have a Quebec Diploma of Secondary Studies or a High School Leaving Certificate or have received instruction deemed sufficient by the College. In addition, candidates who are non-native speakers of English must prove their linguistic proficiency by submitting official documentation for one of the following English proficiency tests before starting this course.
